About Scott

Other than helping my Criminal Defense and College Disciplinary Defense clients, my passion is encouraging other lawyers to focus on the skills that will assist them in running a successful legal business.Long Island Criminal Defense Attorney Scott J Limmer wants to help you reboot your law practice.

After I graduated SUNY Albany in 1990, I attended Nova Southeastern Law School and received my Juris Doctor degree in 1993. I worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Nassau County from 1994 to 1998, where I handled various criminal prosecutions.

On February 2, 1998, I opened up the Law Office of Scott J. Limmer. Rented an office, bought furniture, a computer and business cards and I was ready to go. Luckily, clients started hiring me fairly quickly and my practice got off to a good start. Over the years I have handled thousands of criminal cases throughout Long island and New York City, from the simplest of misdemeanors to the most serious felonies, in both State and Federal Court.

Everything was going very well for me professionally. I was practicing exclusively criminal defense. I was satisfied financially. I may have had a bad month or two each year, but it would always even out during the rest of the year. The practice was doing well until 2010. This was the first year that less clients had hired me than the last. I just figured it was slow and “business would pick up.” Unfortunately, the trend continued in 2011 and then 2012. At some point I realized that — between the economy, the rising number of small and solo practices, and other issues specific to the practice of criminal law — business was not just going to “pick back up.”

I needed to do something. The business of law had fundamentally shifted and if I didn’t adapt, my practice was going to slip away from me. I had to be proactive. I had to completely change the way I thought about myself and my practice.

I needed to learn how to Reboot my Law Practice. I started reading and talking to other business owners to learn how to run a successful business. I learned on a high level about marketing, client acquisition, self management and networking. I created new websites, started networking, better understood the tools I needed to be successful and began managing my practice like the business that I should have been nurturing for 17 years. I applied all of what I learned and my practice — and myself — have been reenergized.

After brainstorming some ideas to help the practices of a few of my friends, Oscar and I came up with the idea of starting a podcast to share our experiences and advice. I’m very excited to help others with some direction and guidance on how to Reboot your Law Practice.
